Healthy snacks are often taken for granted. In the Detroit school in which I teach, my students often fend for themselves to get what foods they do not get from their parents. The school lunches are not always palatable or nutritious, the cheap foods the students get are from gas stations consist of Hot Cheetos, candy, and any kind of junk snack food that makes them either hyper or run down(depending on the time of the day) as they have no real stable diet. I have found this affects their behavior greatly, especially after lunch. These kids need protein, as when I have had some on hand I soon discovered they would look to me to feed them. Of course finding affordable snacks that have some nutritive value is a challenge. From the options available I have tried to find them options that could help them stay focused through their day.
