My literacy professor in college emphasized that the brain functions differently when reading from a screen than when reading a tangible book. Even as adults, it's easy to be overwhelmed at times by tab-switching maneuvers when referencing texts or data. Click, clack, click, clack. Having hard copies of Copper Sun will make an enormously positive difference in my students' ability to analyze characters and themes. Reading the PDF is doable, but far from ideal. If I am able to check out a hard copy of Copper Sun to each of my students, they will be able to literally and figuratively grasp the concepts! I am so excited to guide my students through this novel. Though Amari and Polly face different challenges than any of us today, their incredible courage and grit make their characters both relatable and inspiring to young people who must also forge their own path in the world. This novel contains rich themes about equity, a major focus of my classroom. Polly, the indentured servant in the story, completely changes her mindset from the beginning to the end of the novel in regards to Amari and slaves like her. Polly learns that all people have feelings, abilities, and deserve respect.
