I am requesting resources to help my students learn new social emotional skills and to create a calm down corner where they can practice the social emotional skills they already have. Because of the COVID pandemic my students have not had a normal academic year since the 2018-2019 school year. This means that the last "normal" year my 8th grade students experienced was their 5th grade year. My students are thriving in the SEL competencies around social awareness (understanding perspective of others) and relationship skills (creating healthy relationships/communicating clearly). However, they are really struggling with self-awareness (recognizing emotions & strengths) and self-management (regulating emotions). With this project I hope to purchase curriculum to teach them to recognize & manage their emotions with various coping skills. I want to build on their strengths & help them, recognize their strengths, so I am also requesting curriculum around self-esteem, resiliency, and grit. I would love to build a calm down corner so once they have learned this skills they can practice them in my office. Lastly, I am requesting conversation starters. Though the majority of my students are strong in relationship skills, there is a group of students who did full distance learning and struggle with this. I am hopeful that the conversation starters will help me build strong relationships with them so they feel part of our school community.
