My students range in age from five to ten years old. They are sweet children who are willing to learn, and who try very hard, but have various disabilities that put them at a disadvantage. Their disabilities range from specific learning, to social/emotional disabilities, and autism. They attend a public school in Chicago. These children have a lot of odds against them. Over ninety percent of my students are English language learners on top of the fact that they have a disability. Many of them come from households where the literacy rate is low or non-existent. This means home support is minimal at best. These children try their best every single day to become better readers, writers, and mathematicians. They have the ability to learn just as well as everyone else but require additional support and a little patience. They love school and deserve nothing but the best, which at the bare minimum is up-to-date materials.
