These books will help me provide my students with an updated classroom library, full of books for all my students, but especially new books for my emergent readers. One of the biggest disappointments of being a distance learning kindergartener was the lack of access to the library. When my first graders came into my classroom and saw the shelves of books, their eyes were huge - "we get to pick?!" and then when they went to the school library and learned that they could take a book with them, it was absolute joy. There really is no replacement for a real book, a book that makes you feel smart and confident, a book that makes you laugh, a book that you can read out loud with other kids. This supports the NVACS standard RF 1.4. While technology certainly has its place in helping students learn letters, sounds, and more, in a fun way, it is vital that students also have access to books that meet their needs for independent reading. My students love the choices, they love the feel of the books, and they love the feeling of community when they get to share interesting parts, funny parts, or just favorite parts of of books with other kids. The microscopes will support my students love of science and reading, and the intersection of the two. The National Geographic readers will spark my students' curiously about the natural world and the microscopes will give them a new view and new questions about which to wonder.
