The standards for mathematical practices emphasizes that students need to learn using concrete manipulative, classroom discourse, and multiple ways of representations as students learn by doing it and by expressing themselves through classroom discourse, either face to face, or through digital tools like Nearpod collaboration boards and chats. My students will benefit from this project because they will learn mathematics through hands-on-activities using concrete manipulatives and multiple representations using whiteboard and markers. In addition, students will be engaged through classroom discourse with students who are online and face to face in the classroom, for which they are required to use computers with headphones. My students will reach their academic math goals for 6th grade, if they work together with their partners, or in whole group, to develop their problem-solving skills by learning the math concepts they missed during the COVID pandemic and be able to perform well on the SBAC test at the end of the school year. During the pandemic learning online, students developed some technology skills, but they missed the classroom discourse, exploring with concrete manipulatives, solving problems with paper and pencil, and explaining their mathematical thinking to others. Therefore, this school year my students need to utilize as many tools as they can to continue developing their math skills and be ready for the next grade level. Students need to work on all standards for all math domains: Numbers and Operations, Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry.
