Fighting racism and injustice is a lifelong journey of understanding ourselves, our power, our history, and the role we play in perpetuating it. Starting to talk about race and equity at a young age is critical to creating awareness and lasting change, and books are one of the most effective and practical tools for initiating these conversations. My hope is that having these books in my library will facilitate conversations regarding these topics in an open and healthy way. During read-a-louds, I want the students to steer clear of stereotypes, foster healthy racial identity, model taking action, and re-evaluate the "classics".
