Learning a language requires a large quantity of compelling, comprehensible input. This basically means students need to hear and read a lot of Spanish that is both comprehensible and interesting to them in order to acquire the language. Because of the inherent limits of distance education, my students missed a lot of comprehensible input last year, which has left them with significant learning gaps. Reading is the most efficient form of comprehensible input, according to language acquisition researcher Stephen Krashen. Giving students the opportunity to choose a book that is interesting to them from among several options offers an excellent chance for making that input compelling to each student. Knowing this, I would love to be able to do literature circles with my students, which will require multiple copies of several texts at each level. In addition to helping my student meet Standard NVAC WLS 2.A.4.2, having them read in the context of literature circles will give them an extended social learning opportunity, and by having them choose groups based on what book they are most interested in reading, they will specifically have the opportunity to work with other students who share at least one of their interests. This structured opportunity for collaboration and socialization will be very beneficial to my students!
