Our school is situated in a region of the state with a large number of remarkable students and their families, but also a high crime rate and level of poverty. Many students utilize our school as a safe haven where they can spend a few hours a day escaping the challenges of their young lives. My students come from various countries, socioeconomic statuses, and backgrounds. To get to school, our students must travel through some of the most impoverished and dangerous areas of town. Yet, they still manage to drag themselves out of bed each morning, enthused about the opportunities ahead of them and to be the first members of their families to bring about positive change.
