Fifth graders are very social creatures and I'm excited to help them manage their emotions in social settings! After spending a year at home, my fifth graders have struggled to remember how to interact positively with peers. This project is geared at creatively combining collaboration, centers, and team work to ensure students are given the skills and opportunities to work and learn together. Each item in this project works together to create the necessary environment for students to interact positively with their peers. After a 15 minute class meeting, students will move through various SEL centers. There will be a tech center in which the headphones will allow students to access social emotional curriculum on technology in an interactive way that we have not been able to use yet. Then, students are able to access printed and laminated SEL centers (task cards, mini games, would you rather games) organized in a hanging file system as well as the SEL games. Students will move through 3-4 15 minute centers per day in groups of 4-5 which will give them an opportunity to practice the skills they are learning in a structured environment. Students will be able to regulate their emotions through discussions with small groups during centers(SL5.1), present on various topics discussed in groups (reader's theater based on SEL topics as a center) (SL5.6), and work closely with peers to revise various written projects (creating various task cards and other reader theater based on actual social interactions they encounter with others) (W5.5). Students will journal daily (on the tech platform) (W5.4) to identify and define their emotions.
