The materials I am asking for are a class set of novels, so the key standards that will be promoted are the reading literature (RL) standards 7.1-7.4. The novel that I am asking for is rich in symbolism, imagery, and connotation, and it has some strong themes. It is both challenging and engaging for students and provides lots of opportunities for rich conversation. The protagonist of the novel that I am requesting goes through a mental health journey that some students will relate to and other students will learn from. The journey of Caden, the protagonist, provides an opportunity to discuss some of the mental health issues that students have been struggling with throughout the pandemic, and I plan on using the book in a unit that will include a project that has students creating posters and/or PSAs that will provide encouragement for other students who are going through their own difficulties.
