Preschool students are expected to communicate their wants and needs, but imagine not being able to tell your teacher that you're thirsty or that you need a pencil? This is a reality for many non-verbal special education students. A simple picture exchange communication system can give them the ability to express their wants and needs. Help me provide my non-verbal special education students with a way to communicate their wants and needs at school and at home. The color printer will be used to print sheets of 1x1 inch individual pictures of everyday classroom items and activities. These pictures will be printed on cardstock, cut to size, laminated, and placed in a "communication binder" to create a picture exchange communication system. Non-verbal students will be able to use these communication pictures to tell their teachers, peers, and family what they want and need. Students will learn to locate their binder, find a picture that represents the item they want, and hand it to another person in exchange for the actual item.
