The pandemic has created many challenges for my math class as many children were not fully prepared for the academic standards and rigor of 6th grade math. Many of the students also had limited opportunities to interact and engage with students in a classroom setting due to the virtual (at-home) learning requirement during COVID-19. Being able to collaborate and problem solve in a math class is pivotal to their understanding of the academic content standards. Therefore, to foster a collaborative environment with their peers, it is imperative to incorporate hands-on learning activities that allows students to solve real world problems in my classroom. The opportunity to bring calculators for every student into the classroom will allow students many opportunities to learn how to to solve multi-step, real world problems collaboratively while gaining a proficient understanding of the math standards. The ability to bridge the learning gap of students from the previous two years will help students gain a better understanding and appreciation for math. Thank you for giving my students this amazing opportunity!
