Students returning from at home or hybrid learning environments this past year due to Covid-19 have missing math skills and generally lack the intrinsic motivation to persevere when solving typical math problems. When students see math in action either through real world examples or games, students become more engaged in math. By providing games for use in the classroom and at home after the school day ends, students will develop an increased understanding of why learning math is important. Through games, students will also build background knowledge to apply to problem solving scenarios inside the classroom. The specific math skills to be supported will vary depending upon which game is focused upon, including comparing ratios, understanding the rational number system, geometry, probability, number sense, and review of basic math facts. Additionally, math games support the overall math practices of problem solving, modeling with math, making sense and persevering, critiquing the reasoning of others, looking for repeated reasoning and structure, and using tools strategically.
