Kindergartners are expected to be reading by Christmas. Only 57% of my students know their letter names and sounds, which means they are not ready to move into decoding words. 10% of my students are struggling with writing their own name. Another challenge is that Kindergartners' attention spans are very limited. In order for me to keep students engaged I need to come up with ideas to help them with their foundational skills. In my Title I Tutoring, I am working with Kindergartners and first graders who are struggling with letter names and sounds. The supplies that I am requesting will be used with both groups in order to successfully prepare them for reading. Once they experience the joy of reading, their social and emotional learning will be wired into their brains to help sustain their academic confidence.
