Since returning to school I am trying to engage my students as much as possible. Half of time spent in assignments using Assistive technology. The reason for this is to make them proficient and technology savvy in case a probable lockdown happens. For the past 5 months, the student have been using their Chromebook but this limits them to classwork, assignments and tests. For students with Autism, this routine is getting old and sometimes the cause of their frustration. Introducing the Fire tablets will be an alternative for the kids to be engaged and also something they can work for (reinforcer). Technology especially tablets has shown to support kids with autism to achieve results that include (a) Motivation, (b) Socialization, (c) Organization and (d) Communication. The latter is the goal for this purchase since it coincides with the Nevada Special Education Curriculum on AD Computer Education and Technology Guidance, 1. Empowered Learner. It matches our target goals which is Section 1.3: Students use social media platforms to build social capital and Section 1.4: Students actively respond to constructive feedback when using digital tools to create content. I am hoping to utilize this technology so it can help my students with autism to improve their communication abilities. The fire tablet also had applications that deals with different areas of communication that include social skills, verbal and nonverbal communication skills.
