My students are first and second year French students who are learning a language that is completely new to them in an environment that is completely new to them as none of them have attended high school in a regular (non-Covid) year. These students need physical materials to read, manipulate, and create. I am also requesting two variable-height desks and a presenter/laser pointer so that the students and I can have flexibility with where we are sitting in relation to each other and whether we are standing or sitting. Students are not used to how physically and mentally exhausting being in-person is, so having that flexibility will help students have more engagement and more options. Free Choice Reading is such a powerful way to develop and improve literacy, overall language skills, empathetic and emotional intelligence, and communicative skills. Students need to be able to understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics (WL.9-12.1)], make intercultural connections (WL.9-12.4)], make interdisciplinary connections [build, reinforce, and expand their knowledge of other disciplines while using the language to develop critical thinking and to solve problems creatively (WL.9-12.6)], discover linguistic connections (WL.9-12.8)], and to "acquire information and diverse perspectives" [Learners access and evaluate information and diverse perspectives that are available through the language and its cultures (WL.9-12.8)]. Though we are fully in-person this year (as opposed to hybrid last year) our students are struggling even more with physical and emotional distancing (no supply sharing, screen fatigue, being tied to technology). The physical texts I'm requesting and the materials to enable physical engagement (page protector whiteboards, glue, scissors, markers, etc) will directly enrich and enable students' language and intercultural learning and enable them to meet and exceed the expectations from all of the above standards.
