My students can be more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of flexible seating. Also providing visual prompts with laminated pictures/schedules for the flow of tasks needed to complete daily work enables them to independently self-monitor their pacing and build confidence and self esteem. Sensory input and visual aides are supplemental materials for students to help improve their ability to focus on academics within the classroom setting. Wobble stools help students, especially those who are easily distracted, focus on lessons. Visual aides, activities in pictures on their desk, give them a sense of routine and know what choices they have for each lesson throughout the day. Pencil boxes organize classroom tools to minimize distraction of pencils, scissors, etc. laying on a desk vs being put away out of sight until needed. Organizing school tools is also a life skill that may not be practiced outside the classroom but can be part of the classroom expectation and provides varied access to tools needed throughout each day.
