Our students listen to "book talks" for a unit (approximately ten titles). Our units include immigration, race and culture, diversity, world issues, Japanese Internment, Civil Rights and a nonfiction unit. We strive to offer new books to students that represent culturally responsive teaching. Students pick their top three choices and are then placed in a group of students who all read the same book. Students are given writing prompts and are taught literary elements that they then use during book club discussions. It is profoundly wonderful to hear middle school students discussing foreshadowing, symbolism, aha moments, themes and other literary elements. It is a powerful way to practice reading, writing and analyzing literature while focusing on issues relevant to their lives.
