The PCR machine is a necessary tool used by research and medical scientists to take a small sample containing very low numbers of an "infectious" particle and amplify it (increasing it) exponetially. This current technique is used to detect diseases in sick individuals and is the gold standard to diagnose both COVID-19 and HIV infection. In the classroom, we will use the PCR machine to demonstrate to the students how infectious diseases are diagnosed in the real world. Standards addressed: Biology Standard: IST-1.P Explain the use of genetic engineering techniques in analyzing or manipulating DNA. Objective: Use PCR technique to analyze DNA sequences from infectious organisms for the diagnosis of infection.
