Reading opens up a world of knowledge and imagination. My students love it when I read a book to them. They say, "Again, again, read it again." Because my Kindergarten students are just learning, it is important for them to handle books rather than watch a book reading. I have many sets of books that just need the audio recording to go with them. Some of these recordings are available on apps like audible. The iPad will enable me to download those recordings. Listening to a book, will expose the students to more books in a more worthwhile way than is currently happening in our classroom. Listening centers are a valuable tool to help Kindergarten students learn the ins and outs of reading. Listening centers help with comprehension, vocabulary development, independence, word recognition, letter recognition, knowing what a fluent reader sounds like, word pronunciation, topics to write and draw about, practicing book handling skills, tracking words, and developing a desire to become a better reader. Our school is in a very rural area and most of the students come from low income and poverty households. They don't have much exposure to many of the jobs, places, art, etc. that other areas have. A listening center can bring these students an awareness of the many things life can offer. The last 2 years with COVID has increased the stress in their lives. A listening center will also enable the students to create a private area where they can calm down, relax and distress. Standards that will be addressed are ELA K-RL 1-3, 5, 7, 9, 10 / K-RI 1-3, 7-10 / K-RF 1, 4 / K-W 1-3, 7-8 / K-SL 1-2, 4 / K-L 6
