In my engineering and physics classes, I really strive to have as many hands-on, practical, meaningful projects as possible. Our principal does a great job identifying projects around the school for the students to work on and develop solutions for. In the past, these have included designing and building sound-absorbing panels for our gym, a skateboard storage rack, and shelving for a greenhouse. Other projects include building toys, a hover craft, mousetrap cars, roller coasters, and students this year in my second level engineering class have expressed interest in figuring out how to design and build a go cart. Unfortunately, the tools we currently have available are minimal, making the projects difficult and time-consuming to build. Students frequently become frustrated when their projects don't fit together as they have planned because they had to saw the pieces by hand and their cuts weren't straight or precise enough. I am hoping that these projects will instill my students with the skills and confidence to use tools to build things they need after they graduate and beyond. I also have students go through OSHA training so they come away with a safety mindset both in the workplace and at home.
