Students don't need to read Shakespeare to engage in critical analysis of a text. By tapping into the popularity of superheroes in teen culture and students' ample background knowledge of universes other than our own, these graphic novels will allow students to practice critical reading of a high-interest text and explore complex issues through reflection and collaboration. The essential question at the center of our reading - Are people defined by their intentions, motivations, actions, or results? By their finest moments or their mistakes? We live in an increasingly visual world. Students need to be able to engage with the ideas and information around them, whether the medium be text, image, audio, or video.
