One of the primary standards for school counselors in Clark County School District is for school counselors to implement a curriculum, offer individual planning and deliver responsive services in order to assist students in developing mindsets and demonstrating behaviors for academic, college/career and social/emotional development. Since we have returned to school after the shutdowns, kids are really feeling stress. More and more students are coming to my counseling office with feelings of stress and anxiety. There are been a substantial increase in the number of panic attacks that we are being asked to respond to. Many times it is a challenge to even get them to calm down to a level where they are able to articulate what is happening. These items could be in my office and help to provide an environment where they feel safe and comfortable. Research has shown the cathartic value in the physical act of drawing and/or coloring which is why I felt the colored pencils and books would prove helpful. Many of them just need a moment to pause and refocus. Others need more time where they can share what is on their mind. I am hoping that I will be able to provide what they need.
