Students will meet the following objective of the Next Generation Science Standards: (MS-LS1-1) Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells. What does it mean to be alive? What is the basic unit of life? are the two essential questions students will answer after identifying life on varying surfaces in and outside the classroom. To achieve this, students will create microscope slides and investigate them thoroughly with digital microscopes. Students will distinguish what they see as living and non-living, then use their findings to explain how unicellular organisms are indeed alive, even though we cannot see them with a naked eye.
