In the past several years, there has been a dramatic drawdown of electives such as Home Economics in secondary schools, in lieu of more STEM focused courses. However, Home Ec is the original STEM elective and needs to be brought back! It is vitally important to teach students these essential life skills. In my course, they will learn basic household budgeting, sewing, cooking and life preparedness. These skills will expand on what they are learning as part of the Social Studies financial literacy standards, specifically SS.6-8.FL.4 Savings and Spending. Students will learn how to mend and cook the basics, while learning how to budget their money.
