Reading comprehension is at an all-time low. When I ask my students to read, the groaning and apathetic moans permeate my classroom. I asked the students what would get them excited about reading again. They expressed that they wished to have choices about things that they are interested in. Texts that are modern or relatable. I asked them to come up with a list of books that they would like to read. I added all of these books to my list. They've also asked for a more creative approach to assessment. Project-based learning instead of traditional multiple-choice tests or traditional essays. I found a list of creative projects that students can do with their independent reading books, and we've done one so far. They have been great, but I think they would be even better with more materials and book choices.
