Research has proven that students develop language by obtaining comprehensible input. The more interesting the input, the quicker students can acquire French and become proficient, without even realizing that it's happening.
With the French novels I have chosen, students will be able to choose a book, on their level, for quiet reading time each day in order to acquire new vocabulary while also reinforcing what they have already learned. The repetition in the context of the story will ensure that learning takes place and lasts.
We start each class with a few minutes (around 10-20 minutes in a 90 minute class) of sustained silent reading. Students choose the novel they are most interested in as well as the novel that best fits their reading level. After reading time, students discuss what they have read and what they liked or disliked about it. They always have the option of switching to a new book. Enjoying what they read is what makes this work. Discussing what they are reading is the hook that non-readers need to try out something a peer has enjoyed.
