Many students have a hard time accepting microscopic things are real. By isolating DNA they can see that it exists. They will also have a chance to work with real animals (fruit flies) and see that many of the ideas that Mendel proposed are real and can be seen. All of the supplies requested will be used directly with students to allow them to share in the discovery of science. Many of them have never seen a fruit fly up close let alone learn anything about their typical life cycles. This plus, what they will learn about the inheritance of traits makes this an invaluable experience.
