Our students struggle to learn in the traditional classroom environment. Due to gaps in their academics caused by behavior difficulties, our students need intensive direct and often hands-on instruction to make up the instruction lost in the past. Because many of our students continue to struggle with behavior, ADHD and anxiety, a variety of techniques must be utilized within the classroom to encourage academic and behavior growth. The educational resources you will be funding include hands-on living science manipulatives that will reinforce in their understanding of the scientific method (N.5.A.1), the life cycle of living organisms (L.5.B.2/L.5.B.2), and functions of the human body (L.5.B.1/L.8.B.3). The classroom STEM robotics projects provide collaborative exercises (SEL H2.3.1) in addition to engineering and math experience (5.NF.B.6/5.G.A.2) In addition to the struggles our population of students have to overcome, many of them struggled with housing and food insecurity during the pandemic which caused their education to take a back seat. Now, we have to work diligently to not only engage the students in the education that they missed during the pandemic, but also accommodate their learning and behavior challenges that were present even before distance learning. Social skills are developed through group actives such as reading SEL targeted books and discussing the characters and outcomes as a group (H2.3.1, H3.3.4, H3.3.6). As a special education teacher, I cover all areas of Nevada Academic Standards across multiple grade and ability levels. I have found that tactile and hands-on learning allows my students to make connections between what they are learning and the real world outside of school. This is how we make our special needs population succeed.
