These resources will promote Nevada Academic Content Standard SS.9-12.CE.24. (Analyze ways in which individuals can participate in the process of creating positive changes for their communities by taking informed civic action). This also relates to NEPF Professional Standard 4, Family and Community Engagement. This project is for National Honor Society (NHS)/National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) members attending the 2021-2022 CCSD district-wide conference hosted in person by Shadow Ridge HS.
One of the key components of NHS/NJHS is service and this project is geared towards community service. The district conference is open to all CCSD NHS/NJHS organizations. Throughout the conference day, students participate in workshops on academics/scholarship, leadership, etc. - the key characteristics of NHS/NJHS. We also have a community service fair where we invite various community organizations to speak with students on how they can get involved. Part of the day is also spent working on a community service project. With each conference, we partner with a local organization and our service project is geared toward that organization. For example, we have created Christmas wreaths for an assisted living facility and made sensor stimulating toys for children at UMC children's hospital. This year we have partnered with Shade Tree, the women and children's shelter in Las Vegas. Students will hear a presentation about Shade Tree and the role it plays in the Las Vegas community. They will then create pillows with happy faces on them for children at Shade Tree. The pillows will be delivered to Shade Tree for distribution.
This project benefits so many students and children in the Las Vegas valley. For our NHS/NJHS students, it is a chance to collaborate with their peers and serve their community. For the children of Shade Tree, the pillow can provide some comfort in a tumultuous time.
