I am a counselor at a middle school in Whittier. While the transition back to school in person has been exciting, one of the challenges we have encountered this year has been a rise in mental health concerns. One of our counseling team goals this year is to create a wellness room. We would like to have a space dedicated to giving our students the coping tools and strategies necessary to decrease stress and anxiety. We are asking the community to join in our venture to achieve these goals. Our school is a school of 725 students with a population of predominantly Latino students in the city of Whittier. Many students who attend our school come from lower socio-economic single parent households. Whittier is a very close community and word of mouth goes a long way. It is my hope that by having a safe haven, students will place high value in their well being. Our vision for the wellness room includes dedicated spaces that focus on the five senses. Some of these include an art area, an affirmation wall, a calming corner with fidgets, a music station, and a gaming area. Aside from having a dedicated space, the counseling team is also running small counseling groups and parent education workshops. Some of the items we would love to add to our room include art supplies, board games, sound diffusers, bean bags and fabric for wall décor. Thank you for your time and consideration of this request.
