By the end of second grade, our students need to be able to read and comprehend literature and informational text proficiently in the grades 2-3 text complexity band. (RL and RI.2.10). Due to the pandemic (and to no fault of their own or others), most of my students were not able to receive the proper instruction to help them become strong readers at the end of kindergarten and throughout first grade. Presently, more than half of my class is reading at an early first grade level. They have the knowledge of letters and sounds. They need the opportunity to practice blending sounds by reading books that interest them. The fiction and nonfiction leveled books I selected will help improve my students' fluency and confidence as we read them in small groups and independently. They will be encouraged to check them out of our classroom library and share them with their families.
