Ever since my 6th graders came back from online learning for a whole year, their skills in physically writing, using pencil and paper, have been a challenge to hone and improve. It took a lot of effort for us as a class to just start creating original narratives, argumentative pieces, short responses, and even sentences! My students started the school year unmotivated to use their pencils as well as write down their own ideas and thoughts. Amidst all my planning and frustration, I realized that the only way to motivate my students to write is to give them topics that are relevant and interesting to them! The supplies that I am requesting will fund our many writing units that I have created and planned for the year. It ranges from writing scary story narratives for Halloween this October to writing an argumentative piece on why or why not students should be allowed to use their cellphones in school. These supplies will also greatly support the students in my classes who struggle to purchase their own supplies for school. Additionally, these supplies will be used for cross-curricular assignments and activities between Social Studies and writing. My students will go through writing narratives in the perspective of an Ancient Egyptian or as an Athenian citizen participating in a Socratic seminar. They will participate in writing experiences where they can compare and contrast their lives today from those who lived during the ancient times. My students would love to have their own writing journals and notebooks where they would keep all their original pieces in one place instead of constantly losing their work because they only utilize loose leaf paper!
