I work at a small school where teachers are often asked to pick up extra duties. As such, I teach both ELA & an elective. I often heard or saw people complaining about how they felt that high school failed to teach them the critical and practical life skills that really matter. That is what inspired me to create my life skills course. The course aims to fill in those crucial knowledge and skill gaps so that students are able to graduate from high school feeling like what they learned was worthwhile. Two of our most popular yet most difficult units to progress through are the sewing & textiles unit and the cooking & nutrition unit. At the moment, we share 1 hot top, 2 toaster ovens, and 2-3 sewing machines between about 26 students at a time. This often means that hands-on experience is limited. Getting the supplies in this project would really help so that all students are able to get enough time with these tools to really develop their skills.
