Tactile learners need to physically touch or try something in order to learn the concept best. Often times, tactile cues are used to allow students to remember how to say certain sounds or how to position their articulators (tongue, mouth, teeth, etc). Other times, students need a reinforcer or something that they can work towards. Tactile toys or materials are also used for this purpose. Tactile materials will play many different roles within speech/language therapy sessions. Students can use crayons by coloring different parts of the speech sound system and identifying with articulators are used for different sounds. During sessions, if a student feels frustrated, a break can be initiated and a pop it or squishy toy can be used to calm a student down. Sometimes games can be used as a reward toward the end of a session, if the student has met their session goals. All these materials will be used to help benefit the student and their speech/language needs.
