Adding these books and sets of novels to my classroom library will give my diverse group of students opportunities to be successful in reading. Also, the novels I've chosen will read to rich discussions about real-life decisions my students have to make. For example, in both Tyrell and Drive-By, the main character faces pressure to sell drugs. At least five of my students openly admit to admiring drug dealers, and see selling drugs as a viable profession. Nearly all of my students are regularly offered drugs, and have to deal with peer pressure on a regular basis. Reading this books as a class will give us opportunities to explore these issues while improving literacy skills. For my classroom library, I've chosen books written by Hispanic and African authors as well as books focused on sports for my student athletes. When students have choice about what they read, and can see themselves in books, they are much more likely to want to read.
