All of my students have identified needs in the area of communication. Whether they have speaking needs or language needs, I always tell my students that what they have to say matters. The materials selected are language activities, books, games, and cards which help my students to better express themselves. We work on retelling with sufficient detail and sequence (SL.1.4, RL.2) in order to describe accurately. For standard SL.1.6, my students are asked to formulate sentences appropriate to tasks and situations since we talk in full sentences, focusing on maintaining the semantic integrity of the context but also using appropriate grammar skills when expressing themselves in written and verbal tasks. At the elementary level, I have some children who struggle to understand and express prepositions. By working on spatial positions (L.1), it helps my students to learn to follow classroom directions on paper and routine tasks. Many of my students struggle with social language skills and reasoning skills showing rigidity in thinking and difficulty inferring or reading context clues and body language/non-verbal cues which lead to misinterpretation of social events. Working on SL.1 tasks is effective in order to help my students engage effectively in collaborative conversations with clarity and ease, blending in positively with peers.
