Special education students often have difficulty expressing themselves verbally. Sensory based play can help them focus on something while also expressing emotions or concerns. I use sensory objects to introduce topics in a non-threating way. Sensory objects can also be use to determine preferred methods of communication. By giving the students LEGOs, engineering centers, and other tactile building sets to manipulate while being asked about their feelings, it can help with processing and encourage verbal sharing. The emotion blocks can also help with non-verbal students. It helps many students to manipulate objects while trying to express themselves.
