Since returning to the building I am trying to engage my students as much as possible. Pre-K is a center-based hands-on learning program, so we are exploring academic areas as well art, social/emotional, daily living, and fine/gross motor skills. In the art center, we spend a lot of time working on creative art projects. We are getting to know one another and increasing our social skills by working together daily. Fine motor activities are needed for little hands to develop dexterity and strength. We can help this process by encouraging children to play, explore and interact with toys, clothing fasteners, safe scissors and play dough. This will facilitate fine motor development. These types of “play” activities and manipulation skills will help prepare a child to hold and use a writing utensil. The ability to do so is the first step in learning to color, draw and write. During all of these center-based activities, we work on daily living skills as well as social/emotional growth. My classroom is a place where kids can be themselves and work and learn together.
