Yesterday, I showed my students who require the dictation and text-to-speech functions on their Chromebooks how to use them. A tremendous glow lit up their faces when they realized that they could create paragraphs on screen, despite struggling with key literacy skills. I realized how rewarding and essential it is for students to access all aspects of the learning, regardless of their skill levels. Students need to access tools that allow them to explore their creative side while growing their minds. My school is an arts integration school, so we strive to incorporate opportunities for students to create into every subject we teach. Each student in my class has a token board on their desk, which they use to earn points to paint on a class bulletin board. Because students are highly motivated to participate, they quickly earn a lot of points during class-wide discussions! Needless to say, we go through a lot of paint. Technology is a powerful tool to bridge students' learning gaps, increase independent study, and promote speaking and listening skills. Having a reliable class set of standard headphones would help me to create a more inclusive, accessible environment in our classroom. It can be overwhelming for students when several individuals are attempting to do lessons on i-Ready or answer their podcast questions aloud, at once.
