Our population of students benefits the most when provided with social opportunities both in the school environment and in the community. Students are then able to both practice and get support in their communication abilities, learning social 'norms', appropriate behavior, etc. As a result of COVID, our students had to stay home and were unable- or given little opportunity- to socialize with their peers. That being said, we always -but especially this year- are putting an emphasis on ensuring our students are able to express how they're feeling, learn ways to manage/respond to specific feelings, as well as socialize with their peers! The materials that are being requested will help the students with social/emotional and functional skills- and in a fun way that they'll love! My group of students learn best when given hands-on material and manipulatives in order to help them understand the skill(s) being taught. They also learn best when provided with fun learning games and opportunities. For example, using magnetic tiles to spell words vs just writing them, math visuals and manipulatives in order to add or subtract numbers, etc. This not only supports their understanding when provided with visuals, but it also supports fine motor skills as well (ie. screwing nuts and bolts when also counting how many there are). My students also benefit from sensory items (ie. theraputty, wands, etc) as this is used as a calming technique and a motivator when teaching how to ask for a break when it is needed.
