Breakout boxes are a great way to help students see historian skills come to life! Students can use problem solving and critical thinking skills to analyze sources and discover how a historian acts like a detective to uncover the truth. Students are given a series of puzzles similar to a scavenger hunt. These materials can be used for any social studies topic and even SEL activities. Decoding ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, cracking the Zimmerman Telegram in WWI, or investigating the Boston Massacre are only a few examples of the endless possibilities of breakout boxes. Working together in a safe environment is needed by students now more than ever. Breakout boxes involve collaboration and team building so that students at any level can participate. These activities can be modified for students with disabilities or English Language learners. Students have to work together which encourages sharing knowledge and collective student growth. I have seen how a love for school and social studies can grow from highly engaging activities and these materials can help grow countless students' love for social studies for years to come.
