After being away for the library and not in the classroom because of the pandemic, so many of my students are longing to hold a book in their hands. The titles I selected: Ghost Boys and Black Brother, Black Brother offer a mirror for my students of color to see themselves in a book and a window for those that are not black or brown to better understand the experiences of their classmates. We are going to read and discuss these books as a class and in small groups. The students are also going to keep writing journal to accompany the text. Books have the ability to take us places and let our imagination soar. These two titles are going to be a wonderful addition to my class and to the lives of the 5th graders who enter my classroom.
