Printmaking is an important medium to work in as it opens the door to many opportunities in the art world. Through printmaking, students learn how to create a simple but impactful image, much like graphic designers. The traditional medium has also made quite a comeback; independent print shops that utilize the silk-screen method have seen great success! Linocuts are a step in learning about the various processes. For this unit we will look at the history of printmaking, the advances in technology and finish by creating our own linocuts. Throughout history, printmaking has been central to how we have advanced as a culture. We will look at Illuminated Manuscripts, how they were all done by hand, and then how the print making process changed how we received information; it became more readily available. We will take a journey through history and see how printmaking was utilized for many functions through China and then Europe, Japan and the Americas. As we have a large Hispanic culture, we will look at works created by master Latin America Linocut Artists. We will also discuss how technology has changed to today's digital printers. As we are encouraging our students to read more, we will conclude this unit by creating a linocut that represents ourselves; these will be stamps for books or other personal items. Through our reading program initiative, students will receive books that they can take home as their own and what better way to have ownership than by creating their very own book stamp!
