As students complete their daily assignments, they can choose a center to work from. Having literacy centers allows students to pair up, share ideas, have rich conversations, and increase self-confidence, while improving their fluency, phonemic awareness, and grade level vocabulary. While the teacher is working with a small group, the other students will be able to choose meaningful and engaging grade level literacy centers that they enjoy. What this does, is allow for positive behavior during small group sessions with an emphasis on grade-level literacy standards. As a child, I remember fondly, those teachers who had centers set up for the students who completed their "in class" work. I remember how it motivated me not to just complete my work, but do my best always.
