To be a reader, just like anything else, you have to practice. My students need "good fit" reading materials to independently practice what they are learning during explicit instruction and small groups. For example: A student who is learning digraphs or consonant blends, needs a book with just the right amount of words and sound spelling focus so it doesn't frustrate them. Many of the books in my classroom library are too difficult. A good fit book, (one in which a student can read 98% of the words), will provide an opportunity for effective independent reading practice.
