Students will be learning about the use of DNA in forensics and how DNA is collected, analyzed, and used to individualize or rule out a suspect. PCR will allow the students to visualized the process used to analyze very small, degraded DNA samples to identify unclaimed bodies or identify suspects years after the crimes were committed. Students will have the opportunity to work with real DNA and utilize PCR techniques, an opportunity they might not possible get. Having spent my career in at-risk schools, I have found that these types of labs "hook" many students who would not have considered a career in science or in forensic science. This is critically important to students designated as at-risk and who would not consider any STEM field as a career.
