School is a much more welcoming place when you speak the language of instruction! Currently the bulk of our language learning comes in challenging academic contexts. Games offer a more immediate, comfortable way to rehearse language skills. This will prepare them to interact with academic language at a higher level. Games also teach many social emotional skills, which are needed in kindergarten, especially during/after COVID. Games give children an authentic, meaningful way to communicate with each other. They help children to learn turn taking and cooperation and while practicing the vocabulary and language skills to understand and engage with academic English. They will practice asking and answering questions, working collaboratively to reach a goal, using descriptive language, and basic academic vocabulary. By doing this with play - in bright, colorful, engaging games, students will gain lots of language skills (and social emotional skills of being part of a group, and working with others) in a compelling, fun way.
