Having a hard copy of the book Refugee for each student to follow and read independently rather than reading it on a classroom screen will help improve student literacy and comprehension of this book that links the lives of three children refugees from three different time periods --a Jewish family fleeing Nazi Germany, an extended Cuban family during the time of Castro, and the most recent, a boy escaping Syria. Linking English Language Arts, Writing, Social Studies, and more, this book meets standards for state course middle school objectives and most importantly, gives students an unforgettable sense of the complex world in which they live.
